History
What makes the F10 M5 unique?
The F10 M5 is the fifth iteration of the M5 series to come from BMW M GmbH, the subsidiary of BMW AG responsible for engineering its most performance-oriented products. It is the first M5 to utilize forced induction, specifically an evolution of the same twin-turbocharged V8 motor that initially debuted in the E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M . Like many previous M5 models, the chassis and bodywork are also heavily modified relative to the standard F10 5 Series.
Where was the F10 M5 first introduced?
The F10 M5 was first shown as the M5 Concept at the Shanghai Motor Show in April of 2011. This previewed the styling of the production version, which debuted at the IAA Frankfurt in September of 2011.
Where was the F10 M5 produced?
All F10 M5s were built on the standard 5 Series production line at BMW's Dingolfing factory north-east of Munich.
Did BMW M ever produce an F11 M5 Touring?
While BMW M had previously offered M5 Touring (station wagon) models in both the E34 and E61 generations, it produced the F10 M5 exclusively as a sedan. However, it is highly likely that at least one M5 Touring prototype was produced for evaluation purposes. It is also interesting to note that internal model codes were assigned for the F11 M5 Touring: MX91 (left-hand drive) and MX92 (right-hand drive).
Production Data

Drivetrain
What are the characteristics and specifications of the F10 M5's V8 engine?
The F10 M5 is powered the S63 B44T0 (commonly referred to simply as S63 TU), a development of the same M-tuned 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine first introduced in 2009. The bore (89mm), stroke (88.3mm) and overall design are carried over from the earlier version (designated S63 B44O0), but the newer engine incorporates Valvetronic, BMW's ultra-precise intake valve lift control system that dispenses with the butterfly valve in the intake tract and replaces it with a set of rocker arms controlled by the motor electronics. Additional changes specific to the S63 TU include:
—A revised cylinder head design (including the cover)
—New valvetrain, pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft
—Revised variable camshaft timing (VANOS)
—Larger twin-scroll turbochargers (by roughly 10%) resulting in 21.8 psi of boost (up from 17.4 psi)
—Larger intercoolers
—Increased compression from 9.3:1 to 10.0:1
—Improved cooling system
—MEVD17.2.8 engine management control

In standard form, the S63 B44T0 produces 560 hp from 6,000 to 7,000 rpm and 500 lb/ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,750 rpm. However, M5s equipped with the optional Competition Package develop 575 hp (thanks to revised engine software), while a 600-hp version (with 516 lb/ft of torque) was fitted to several of the F10 M5 special editions.
What transmissions were offered for the F10 M5?
The vast majority of F10 M5s are equipped with the same 7-speed M Double-Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) first developed for the E90/E92/E93 M3. However, the version in the F10 M5 includes beefier internal components, different gear ratios, and six DRIVELOGIC modes (as opposed to 11). The gear ratios for the M-DCT are as follows: 4.81 (1), 2.59 (2), 1.70 (3), 1.28 (4), 1.00 (5). 0.84 (6), 0.67 (7). The final drive ratio is 3.15:1.

In North America, BMW M alternatively offered the F10 M5 with a ZF Type G 6-speed manual transmission. The gear ratios for the manual transmission are as follows: 4.06 (1), 2.40 (2), 1.58 (3), 1.19 (4), 1.00 (5), 0.87 (6). The final drive ratio is 3.15:1.
What kind of stability control system is fitted to the F10 M5?
The F10 M5 is equipped with an advanced Dynamic Stability Control system jointly developed by Teves and BMW that is able to reduce engine power and/or apply braking force to any single wheel. Like earlier DSC systems, the M-tuned version in the F10 M5 features Brake Standby (which prepares for hard braking by pressuring the pad up against the rotor when the driver abruptly reduces throttle), Brake Drying (which pressures the pad up against the rotor when the rain sensor detects moisture in order to keep the brake pads dry), and Start-Off Assistant (which holds the brakes for one second after the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal in uphill conditions). DSC can be completely disabled or switched into M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which raises the threshold at which the system will engage. The DSC system is designed to work in concert with the standard Active M Differential (AMD).
What is the Active M Differential (AMD) and how does it work?
The Active M Differential (AMD) fitted to the F10 M5 is a further development of the Variable M Differential Lock first introduced on the E46 M3 in 2001. Essentially a multi-plate clutch with electronic controls, AMD operates using information from the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to precisely and immediately adjust the differential from completely open to 100% locked. The aggressiveness of the locking action is altered when the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) is engaged.
What is MDrive and how does it function in the F10 M5?
MDrive was initially introduced in the E60 M5 as a way to customize many dynamic vehicle functions using the iDrive system and then store that combination to a single programmable button on the steering wheel that could be selected by the driver at any time. For the F10 M5, BMW M simplified MDrive by introducing dedicated buttons near the shift lever for each of its functions: Dynamic Stability Control (on, off or MDM), engine response (Efficient, Sport or Sport Plus), Electronic Damping Control (Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus), Servotronic power steering assist (Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus) and M-DCT (six DRIVELOGIC modes). These settings can be stored to two programmable buttons (M1 and M2) on the steering wheel.
Chassis
How does the suspension of the F10 M5 differ from that of the standard 5 Series?
The F10 M5 utilizes the same basic multi-link suspension design as other F10 5 Series models. However, nearly every single component has been substantially modified by BMW M GmbH and the geometry is unique to the M5. Additionally, the M5 utilizes forged aluminum lateral links and a reinforcement plate where the front subframe is attached. The rear subframe is bolted directly to the chassis. Finally, the springs, shocks (with standard adaptive damping) and anti-roll bars have all been specifically tuned by BMW M, with additional tweaks on F10 M5s equipped with the Competition Package.
What type of braking system is used on the F10 M5?
The F10 M5 is equipped as standard equipment with four-wheel vented and cross-drilled disc steel brakes that measure 15.7-inches in the front and 15.6-inches in the rear. The two-piece rotors are comprised of an aluminum inner hat and a cast iron outer portion that are connected with steel pins. In addition, a 6-piston fixed caliper is used at the front. All four brake calipers are painted dark blue and feature an M logo.

Beginning in March of 2013, the M Carbon Ceramic brake system was offered on the M5 as an extra-cost option. In addition to increased fade resistance, the main advantage of the ceramic components are reduced weight. For example, each ceramic front disc weighs just 17.1 lbs (versus 30.6 lbs for the steel equivalent), despite the fact that the ceramic version is nearly half an inch larger. M5s equipped with the M Carbon Ceramic option have gold calipers with an M logo.
What type of steering system is used in the F10 M5?
The F10 M5 is equipped with a rack-and-pinion steering system a ratio that varies depending on the amount of lock applied. The mean ratio for the system is 13.1:1, which is 27 percent quicker than the rack used on other 5 Series models. On F10 M5s equipped with the Competition Package, the steering rack is an additional 10 percent faster. In addition, the steering is equipped with Servotronic hydraulic variable power assistance that constantly varies the amount of assist based on vehicle speed. Three different parameters for the overall level of assist can be selected: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.
What are the factory wheel and tire sizes for the F10 M5?
The F10 M5 is equipped as standard equipment with 19-inch "Style 345M" cast-alloy M Double Spoke alloy wheels. These measure 9.0 x 19-inches in front (with 265/40ZR19 tires) and 10 x 19-inches in the rear (with 295/35ZR19 tires). Larger BBS-made 20-inch forged "Style 343M" M Double Spoke alloy wheels, measuring 9.0 x 20-inches in front (with 265/35ZR20 tires) and 10 x 20-inches in the rear (with 295/30ZR20 tires) were offered as an extra-cost option. These were alternatively offered with a black finish in some markets. M5s equipped with the optional Competition Package include unique 20-inch "Style 601M" M Double Spoke cast alloy wheels. However, in many markets the Style 343M wheels could be specified with the Competition Package as a no-cost option.
Cosmetics
How does the exterior of the F10 M5 differ from those of a standard 5 Series?
The exterior styling of the F10 M5 sedan is substantially altered compared to other 5 Series models and differs specifically in the following ways:
—Unique front bumper design (similar but not identical to that of the M Sport/M Performance version) with three large and prominent air intakes, but no fog lights
– Front fenders that are 0.8-inches wider than those on other 5 Series and incorporate unique chrome-edged gills with the "M5" logo and integrated LED turn signals
