History
What makes the F06 M6, F12 M6 and F13 M6 unique?
The F06 M6 Gran Coupe, F12 M6 convertible and F13 M6 coupe are the third iteration of the M6 series to come from BMW M GmbH, the subsidiary of BMW AG responsible for engineering its most performance-oriented products. They share much of their mechanical specification with the F10 M5 sedan, including an evolution of the same twin-turbocharged V8 motor that initially debuted in the E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M . Like previous M6 generations, the chassis and bodywork are also heavily modified relative to the standard 6 Series models.
Where were the F06 M6, F12 M6 and F13 M6 first introduced?
Both the F12 M6 convertible and F13 M6 coupe were announced at the 2012 International Geneva Motor Show, however only the M6 coupe was shown there (the M6 convertible made its actual debut at the New York International Auto Show the following month). The F06 M6 Gran Coupe debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Where were the F06 M6, F12 M6 and F13 M6 produced?
All body styles of the M6 were produced on the standard 6 Series production line at BMW's Dingolfing factory north-east of Munich.
What exactly is an F06 M6 Gran Coupe?
The F06 M6 Gran Coupe was the first M6 variant of its kind produced by BMW M GmbH. Though it has four doors like an M5, the M6 Gran Coupe integrates those doors into the much sleeker 6 Series bodywork, much of the which is shared with the F13 M6 coupe.

What does the term "Life Cycle Impulse" designate?
BMW introduced the term "Life Cycle Impulse" or "LCI" in the late 2000s to designate models that have received their mid-life cosmetic update. Though the practice of introducing cosmetic revisions to existing BMW models at approximately the midpoint of their lifespan dates back to the 1970s, the updated fifth-generation 3 Series was among the first BMWs to officially receive the LCI terminology.
How many examples of all M6 variants were produced with the 6-speed manual transmission?
BMW M offered a 6-speed manual gearbox as a no-cost option exclusively for M6s sold in North America. Though offered for all three body styles (coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe), the manual transmission was no longer offered in combination with the optional Competition Package on later LCI examples. The following are the manual-transmission production totals (including pre-production/development cars) for each M6 version:
F06 M6 Gran Coupe: 103 (61* pre-LCI + 42 LCI) *23 with the Competition Package
F12 M6 convertible: 80 (40* pre-LCI + 40 LCI)*8 with the Competition Package
F13 M6 coupe: 68 (45* pre-LCI + 23 LCI) *19 with the Competition Package
What is the Competition Package and what does it consist of?
The Competition Package, known by the internal option code 7MA, was introduced beginning with July, 2013 production as an option for all three M6 body styles. It consisted of the following features:
—Revised engine management with different boost mapping, yielding 15 additional horsepower (for a total of 575)
—Sport exhaust with black chrome tips
—Revised suspension tuning with shorter (by 10mm) and stiffer (by 20 percent) springs, stiffer damping rates (by 20 percent), stiffer front axle bushings and increased anti-roll bar stiffness (by 15 percent)
—Quicker steering rack (by 10 percent) with revised Servotronic software
—Retuned Active M Differential software
—Retuned M Dynamic Mode (MDM) for Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
20-inch cast alloy "Style 601M" alloy wheels, sized 9.5x20-inch (front) and 10.5x20-inch (rear) NOTE: "Style 343M" forged alloy wheels (in identical sizes) offered as a no-cost option in combination with 7MA in some markets.

With the introduction of the M6 LCI in March of 2015, the optional Competition Package received an additional 25 horsepower and 16 lb/ft of torque, for a grand total of 600 hp and 516 lb/ft of torque. This was effectively the same power output as the limited edition M5 30 Jahre Edition introduced one year earlier. It is worth noting, however, that the M6 LCI with Competition Package was no longer offered in conjunction with the six-speed manual transmission.
How many examples of the M6 were produced with the optional Competition Package (7MA)?

Drivetrain
What are the characteristics and specifications of the M6's V8 engine?
All M6 body styles are powered the S63 B44T0 (commonly referred to simply as S63 TU), a development of the same M-tuned 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine first introduced in 2009. The bore (89mm), stroke (88.3mm) and overall design are carried over from the earlier version (designated S63 B44O0), but the newer engine incorporates Valvetronic, BMW's ultra-precise intake valve lift control system that dispenses with the butterfly valve in the intake tract and replaces it with a set of rocker arms controlled by the motor electronics. Additional changes specific to the S63 TU include:
—A revised cylinder head design (including the cover)
—New valvetrain, pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft
—Revised variable camshaft timing (VANOS)
—Larger twin-scroll turbochargers (by roughly 10%) resulting in 21.8 psi of boost (up from 17.4 psi)
—Larger intercoolers
—Increased compression from 9.3:1 to 10.0:1
—Improved cooling system
—MEVD17.2.8 engine management control

In standard form, the S63 B44T0 produces 560 hp from 6,000 to 7,000 rpm and 500 lb/ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,750 rpm. However, pre-LCI M6s equipped with the optional Competition Package develop 575 hp (thanks to revised engine software), while a 600-hp version (with 516 lb/ft of torque) was fitted to M6 LCIs equipped with the Competition Package.
What transmissions were offered for the F06 + F12 + F13 M6?
The vast majority of M6s are equipped with the same 7-speed M Double-Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) first developed for the E90/E92/E93 M3. However, this version includes beefier internal components, different gear ratios, and six DRIVELOGIC modes (as opposed to 11). The gear ratios for the M-DCT are as follows: 4.81 (1), 2.59 (2), 1.70 (3), 1.28 (4), 1.00 (5). 0.84 (6), 0.67 (7). The final drive ratio is 3.15:1.

In North America, BMW M alternatively offered the M6 with a ZF Type G 6-speed manual transmission. The gear ratios for the manual transmission are as follows: 4.06 (1), 2.40 (2), 1.58 (3), 1.19 (4), 1.00 (5), 0.87 (6). The final drive ratio is 3.15:1.
What kind of stability control system is fitted to the M6?
All F06 + F12 + F13 M6s are equipped with an advanced Dynamic Stability Control system jointly developed by Teves and BMW that is able to reduce engine power and/or apply braking force to any single wheel. Like earlier DSC systems, the M-tuned version in the M6 features Brake Standby (which prepares for hard braking by pressuring the pad up against the rotor when the driver abruptly reduces throttle), Brake Drying (which pressures the pad up against the rotor when the rain sensor detects moisture in order to keep the brake pads dry), and Start-Off Assistant (which holds the brakes for one second after the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal in uphill conditions). DSC can be completely disabled or switched into M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which raises the threshold at which the system will engage. The DSC system is designed to work in concert with the standard Active M Differential (AMD).
What is the Active M Differential (AMD) and how does it work?
The Active M Differential (AMD) fitted to the F06 + F12 + F13 M6 is a further development of the Variable M Differential Lock first introduced on the E46 M3 in 2001. Essentially a multi-plate clutch with electronic controls, AMD operates using information from the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to precisely and immediately adjust the differential from completely open to 100% locked. The aggressiveness of the locking action is altered when the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) is engaged.
What is MDrive and how does it function in the M6?
MDrive was initially introduced in the E60 M5 as a way to customize many dynamic vehicle functions using the iDrive system and then store that combination to a single programmable button on the steering wheel that could be selected by the driver at any time. For the F06 + F12 + F13 M6, BMW M simplified MDrive by introducing dedicated buttons near the shift lever for each of its functions: Dynamic Stability Control (on, off or MDM), engine response (Efficient, Sport or Sport Plus), Electronic Damping Control (Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus), Servotronic power steering assist (Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus) and M-DCT (six DRIVELOGIC modes). These settings can be stored to two programmable buttons (M1 and M2) on the steering wheel.
Chassis
How does the suspension of the M6 differ from that of the standard 6 Series?
The F06 M6 Gran Coupe, F12 M6 convertible and F13 M6 coupe all utilize the same basic multi-link suspension design as other 6 Series models. However, nearly every single component has been substantially modified by BMW M GmbH and the geometry is unique to the M6. Additionally, the M6 utilizes forged aluminum lateral links and a reinforcement plate where the front subframe is attached. The rear subframe is bolted directly to the chassis. Finally, the springs, shocks (with standard adaptive damping) and anti-roll bars have all been specifically tuned by BMW M, with additional tweaks on M6s equipped with the Competition Package.
What type of braking system is used on the F06 + F12 + F13 M6?
The M6 is equipped as standard equipment with four-wheel vented and cross-drilled disc steel brakes that measure 15.7-inches in the front and 15.6-inches in the rear. The two-piece rotors are comprised of an aluminum inner hat and a cast iron outer portion that are connected with steel pins. In addition, a 6-piston fixed caliper is used at the front. All four brake calipers are painted dark blue and feature an M logo.

Beginning in March of 2013, the M Carbon Ceramic brake system was offered on all M6s as an extra-cost option. In addition to increased fade resistance, the main advantage of the ceramic components are reduced weight. For example, each ceramic front disc weighs just 17.1 lbs (versus 30.6 lbs for the steel equivalent), despite the fact that the ceramic version is nearly half an inch larger. M6s equipped with the M Carbon Ceramic option have gold calipers with an M logo.
What type of steering system is used in the F06 + F12 + F13 M6?
The M6 is equipped with a rack-and-pinion steering system a ratio that varies depending on the amount of lock applied. The mean ratio for the system is 13.1:1, which is 27 percent quicker than the rack used on other 6 Series models. On M6s equipped with the Competition Package, the steering rack is an additional 10 percent faster. In addition, the steering is equipped with Servotronic hydraulic variable power assistance that constantly varies the amount of assist based on vehicle speed. Three different parameters for the overall level of assist can be selected: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.
What are the factory wheel and tire sizes for the M6?
M6 coupes and convertibles are equipped as standard equipment with 19-inch "Style 344M" M Star Spoke cast alloy wheels. These measure 9.5 x 19-inches in front (with 265/40ZR19 tires) and 10.5 x 19-inches in the rear (with 295/35ZR19 tires). Larger BBS-made 20-inch forged "Style 343M" M Double Spoke alloy wheels, measuring 9.5 x 20-inches in front (with 265/35ZR20 tires) and 10.5 x 20-inches in the rear (with 295/30ZR20 tires) were offered as an extra-cost option. These were alternatively offered with a black finish in some markets. The optional Competition Package included unique 20-inch "Style 601M" M Double Spoke cast alloy wheels. However, in many markets the forged "Style 343M" wheels could be specified with the Competition Package as a no-cost option.

The M6 Gran Coupe is equipped as standard with 20-inch "Style 443M" Double-Spoke cast alloy wheels measuring 9.5 x 20-inches in front (with 265/35ZR20 tires) and 10.5 x 20-inches in the rear (with 295/30ZR20 tires), though the "Style 343M" forged alloy wheels (in identical sizes) were offered as an alternative in most markets. M6 Gran Coupes with the Competition Package could further be optioned with the "Style 601M" M Double Spoke cast alloy wheels (also in identical sizes).
